Shared Hosting
Shared hosting for the small business is the best way to go. Shared hosting has the server divided up with other websites allowing a lower cost for hosting. In most cases you are allowed more than enough disk space (Usually Between 100-500 Meg) and data transfer per month. The rule of thumb for small business is a minimum of 100 Meg of disk space and 1 gig of transfer.
Dedicated Servers
The big boy on the block and the most expensive! Dedicated servers are used usually by medium and large size companies. The advantage to this form of hosting is complete control with the most disk space and the largest amount of transfer (Most companies selling dedicated servers allow a minimum of 500 gigs of transfer a month). Keep in mind that this requires a lot of technical ability; most companies hire a network administrator to oversee this form of hosting.
As you can see there are many options based on size and needs of your business. Hopefully you are a little more aware of choices out there now and will make the right choice on one that best suits your companies' needs.
Things to look for when Choosing a Domain Names
Choosing a domain name for your web site is a major step for any individual or organization. You need domain names that are sticky, short, meaningful, easy to remember and at the roll of your tongue!
It is very easy to choose a domain name but difficult to find a good name, simply because of the fact that most of the good domain names are taken up by organisations. These domain name organisations take up hundreds of thousands of domain names and treat them as investments. It is not as easy to choose a good domain name. Sometimes, even web professionals spend hours at their computers to find good domain names!
Domain name registrations are cheap to maintain and subscriptions typically last a year. The subscriptions are renewable and paid to registrars by the design companies.
The most common domain names end with .com, .net, etc. Country specific domain names will end with com.au, co.uk, .co.jp, etc. For organisations, domain names will end with .org or be country specific- .org.au, .org.uk, etc.

General rule of thumb is not to sign up for yearly web hosting plans. Instead, get monthly plan where you can unsubscribe from on the second month when you are not happy with the service. That is, if you ended up with an unreliable web hosting company in the first place. Here is a simple guide that can be easily applied to typical web sites: Web Space
Expect a small website to take up 10 and 100 MB. Considering that you may want to expand your website in the near future, it is advisable to get a web hosting plan with ample web space. Make sure that you know your needs before you start looking for your web host. Not every web hosting plan can be upgraded or customised. More than often, webmasters do not get the features they need and are not able to customise their web hosting features.
Monthly Traffic
Data transfer per month are typically referred to as bandwidth. It is the amount of data transfer that occurs between your website and visitors. A small or medium web site will consume between 1 and 5GB of data transfer per month. Larger, commercial or popular websites often consume more than 5GB of monthly data transfer and sometimes, exceeding 100GB of monthly data transfer.
Before you decide on a web hosting plan, be sure to check this:
What is the monthly data transfer/ bandwidth allowed?
Will you be charged if your website exceeds its limit?
Are you able to upgrade/add on your bandwidth?
Connection Speed
Visitors to your web site will often connect via 56K modems or ADSL modems but your web host provider should have a much faster connection. Your website should have high web site connections that are approximately 1000 high speed (56 Kilobytes per second) modems combined- T3 fiber optic connections.
In the early days of the Internet, T1- connections was considered a fast connection. The fastest connections available are T3 connections that are used by Internet Service Providers and major corps.
What is shared hosting?
Shared hosting is very popular and the most common type of hosting used by websites on the Internet today. Shared hosting is very cost effective, because you are sharing hosting with maybe 100 other websites on a single, powerful server. Shared hosting offer just about all your site needs in terms of space, bandwidth, email, etc. You can even order different IP addresses for each of your websites with shared hosting.
The benefits of shared hosting is low cost (average price is around $5 month per website), your own domain name and lots of software options like database, CGI, etc. If you run a small business and don't expect more than 1000 visitors to your website per day, then shared hosting is for you. The only problem with shared hosting is that bandwidth is limited, so if your site becomes very popular you might find yourself running out of bandwidth quickly.
If you ever wanted to test the waters and put your own website up on the Internet, start with shared hosting and your own domain - its the way to go.
What is dedicated hosting?
Dedicated hosting is the opposite of shared hosting. Dedicated hosting is about you being in total control of the server and what goes on the server. You decide whether to host 1 site or 10 of your sites.
Dedicated hosting allows you to tailor database, email and software applications to your desire - so it works the way you want it to. This is powerful. Dedicated hosting is ideal for websites with high traffic and large businesses who want complete control over the server so they can fine tune for special shopping cart software, etc.
Another benefit of dedicated hosting is you can resell the space/bandwidth to people who want to setup their own website. Unlike shared hosting, dedicated hosting will cost considerably more, something like $50 month for a simple dedicated server. If your website is critical to your business, then I'd highly recommend dedicated hosting.
