Lorraine honoured for taking online opportunity
A BRISTOL entrepreneur, who fought illness to successfully establish her own business, has been named one of the region's top business people at an awards ceremony.
Lorraine Evans has been named one of the South West Top 10 business hereos in The Barclays Trading Places Awards, at a gala luncheon in Bristol.
The awards recognise men and women who have overcome various barriers and battled against the odds to postively change their lives by setting up in business.
Following a routine operation in October 2005, Lorraine suffered a pulmonary embolism that sent her health into a downward spiral.
The regular hospital visits forced Lorraine to give up her beautiful home in Wraxall, along with her career and social life.
Whilst looking through a jewellery box inherited from her mother-in-law, Lorraine found a collection of vintage costume jewellery.
Lorraine seen the potential in this market and sought advice from the Jobcentre and Leonard Cheshire.
She also secured an Access to Work grant that allowed her to create a workspace in her home, which made running her own business a real possibility.
Taking advantage of her 21 years experience in IT and office management, Lorraine started House of Francheska in April 2006, selling antiques and collectable costume jewellery online.
John Davis, Barclays marketing director for local business and a judge on the panel said "The Trading Places Awards honour unsung heroes who in, spite of disadvantages or personal challenges, have taken steps to grow their own sustainable business and in doing so have transformed their prospects for the better".
